Two ways to buy
There are only two purchase paths, and they cost very different amounts.
The first is a full-service brand. One company measures, sells, installs and warranties the job, and quotes a single number.
The second is buy-and-hire. You order a tub with a published price, then hire a licensed plumber to install it.
Buy-and-hire is cheaper. It also means you own the coordination, and you handle any dispute about whether a leak is the tub’s fault or the installer’s.
Ask yourself who will manage the job. If nobody in the family can supervise a contractor, pay for the full-service route.
Brand price bands in 2026
AmeriGlide posts every price. Its Sanctuary line ran $2,974 to $5,463 on September 2, 2026.
Freedom Showers also posts prices. Its walk-in tubs ran $4,793 to $5,733, with transfer models at the top.
American Standard lists prices on its own store. Walk-in tubs ranged from about $5,788 for a gelcoat whirlpool model to $9,641 for an acrylic air spa model.

What installation actually involves
The tub is heavy, and the door must seal for 20 years. That is why labor costs so much.
A typical job removes the old tub, adjusts the drain and supply lines, levels the new frame and rebuilds the wall surround. Jetted tubs also need a dedicated electrical circuit.
Kohler says most walk-in baths fit inside a standard tub footprint of 60 inches long by 30 to 32 inches wide. Staying inside that footprint keeps labor down.
Both Kohler and Safe Step say most installs finish in one day. Safe Step says 95% of its installs take a single day.
The extras that surprise people
Quotes go up for reasons buyers rarely expect. Ask about each of these before you sign.
Water heater
A walk-in tub holds far more water than a standard tub. AmeriGlide’s 30 x 60 Sanctuary holds 75 gallons.
Kohler recommends a 50-gallon or larger tank and says a new water heater can cost up to $3,000.
Removing the old tub
Kohler says some companies charge $250 to $700 to haul away the old tub. Kohler includes that step in its own installation.
Walls and trim
New tubs rarely line up with old tile. Kohler prices wall surrounds from about $300 for acrylic to $2,000 for stone.
Grab bars and safety add-ons

Safe Step notes that some cities require permits. Jets, heated seats and lighting all need power the old tub never used.
Cheaper ways to bathe safely
A walk-in tub is not the only answer. Sometimes it is not the best one.
Kohler’s own price guide lists cheaper equipment. A bath or shower chair runs $35 to $765. A transfer bench runs $50 to $350. A bathtub lift runs $380 to $2,500.
A conversion kit that cuts a door into your existing tub runs $800 to $1,800. It is far cheaper, but it turns your tub into a step-over-a-low-lip tub, not a true walk-in.

Financing, discounts and help paying
Both big brands run standing offers. As of September 2026, Kohler advertises $1,000 off plus no interest for 12 months. Safe Step advertises $2,000 off plus a free comfort-height toilet, with the offer set to expire September 30, 2026.
Safe Step also lists a Blue Rewards program worth $750 off per person, up to $1,500 per household. It says it honors AARP and military discounts too.

What a walk-in tub costs to run
The purchase price is not the whole bill.
A walk-in tub holds far more water than a standard tub. AmeriGlide lists 68 gallons for its 30 by 53 model and 80 gallons for the wheelchair-access 30 by 60.
Every bath heats that much water. If you bathe daily, your water and gas or electric bills will move.
Jetted tubs also need cleaning cycles. Kohler notes that jetted or electric models need specialty cleaners every couple of months. They also need a plumber or electrician every few years for jet and motor service.
Budget a little each year for that upkeep. It is small next to the purchase, but it is not zero.
How to get a fair price
Get three quotes. Ask each company for one written number that includes the tub, the walls, the labor and the haul-away.
Ask what happens if the installer opens the wall and finds rot. Ask who pulls the permit.
Ask for the warranty in writing. Kohler and Safe Step both advertise lifetime limited warranties, but the covered parts differ.
Finally, ask whether a smaller tub fits. A 27-inch petite model like AmeriGlide’s Easy Soak 2739 costs less to run and less to heat.
