About Steady Home Guide

Independent, plain-English guides to making a home safer to grow older in.

What we do

Steady Home Guide publishes buying guides, price guides and coverage explainers for the products and services that let older adults stay in their own homes: stair lifts, walk-in tubs, medical alert systems, lift chairs, adjustable beds, grab bars, ramps and in-home care.

Most of our readers are people in their 60s, 70s and 80s, or their adult children helping from a distance. They want a straight answer to three questions: what does it cost, which one should I get, and who will help me pay.

What we are not

We are not a government agency. We are not affiliated with Medicare, Medicaid, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, AARP or any manufacturer. We do not sell or install anything ourselves.

Our guides are general information, not medical, legal or financial advice. Talk to your doctor or an occupational therapist about your mobility needs, and to your plan or state agency about coverage.

How we make money

Two ways. When you ask for quotes through our form, we pass your request to installers who serve your area, and they pay us a referral fee. And when you buy some products through links on our site, the retailer pays us a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Neither payment changes what we recommend. Brands cannot pay to be ranked higher, and we do not accept paid reviews. Full disclosure here.

How we research

Prices come from manufacturer and dealer price lists, retailer listings and, where a brand only quotes in person, from publicly reported customer quotes. Every price carries the month we checked it. Coverage rules come from medicare.gov, cms.gov, medicaid.gov, va.gov and state agency pages.

We use software, including AI tools, to help gather and organize research. Our editors review guides before they are published and re-check prices at least twice a year. Read the editorial policy.

Corrections

If you find a price, program rule or product detail that is out of date, please tell us. We correct errors quickly and note the update date on the guide.
